Life in Bold Colour
Encouraging my viewers to look again at
something they thought they knew,
and to see it in a new way.
…is a self-taught artist living and working in Drumheller, Alberta. Her passion for art began as a young child, but like many, she found herself on an entirely different career trajectory for a significant length of time, only finally returning to her art in 2018.
In her early teens Dusti studied oil painting under a Master artist, and still believes that this is the quickest and most beneficial way to learn. This led to her joining Mastrius in early 2021, learning from other Master artists like David Langevin, Julie Himel, and Desmond O’Hagan, among others.
“We do not see things as they are.
We see things as we are.”
– Rabbi Shemuel ben Nachmani,
as quoted in the Talmudic tractate Berakhot (55b.)
The above quotation, in varying forms, has been attributed to many individuals over the years and can be traced as far back as the Babylonian Talmud. It is an underlying theme that drives Dusti to recreate the world around her, whether it’s a landscape, cityscape or anything in between, with such boldness and drama that the viewer is forced to look again, and to see it in a fresh, new, and exciting way. Vivid colour, high contrast, and dynamic texture are techniques Dusti uses in her paintings to try to recreate the impact that she feels from the world around her and to get her viewers to look again at something they thought they knew.
